Event description
Unusual things that may happen during meditation, what they mean, and what to do about them

About this event

What to make of some of the unusual effects or aftereffects of meditation or spiritual practice? Swirling lights, distorted body sensations, and involuntary twitching or spontaneous movements are some of the more frequent occurrences that can accompany spiritual states. How to make of sense of these is the subject of our upcoming Community Exploration, Navigating Spiritual States.

Facilitated by Raphael Cushnir, one of the world’s foremost experts in the field of emotional intelligence, we’ll explore the variety of these phenomena, share our personal experiences of them, and delve into how to make sense of them and use them for our highest good. Cushnir will talk about the kriya experiences he detailed in his most recent book, Surviving the Divine: A Memoir of Rude Awakening, and his efforts to discern their meaning. Kriyas -- involuntary movements that occur during or outside meditation – are often described in spiritual literature as a process that can occur during the course of spiritual awakening. Cushnir experienced these with fierce intensity and found them enormously disrupted of his everyday life.

Cushnir is a leading voice in the world of emotional connection and present moment awareness. He has shared his unique approach to personal and professional development with millions of readers in O, The Oprah Magazine, Beliefnet, Spirituality and Health, Psychology Today, and The Huffington Post. He is the author of six books, lectures worldwide, and is a faculty member of the Esalen Institute, the Kripalu Center for Yoga and Health, and the Omega Institute for Holistic Studies. In addition, he coaches individuals and teams at Fortune 100 companies, governments, religious organizations, and leading non-profits.

Organizer Sacred Inclusion Network

Organizer of Navigating Spiritual States

The Sacred Inclusion Network is a network of people who, as one of your members put it, "act from the knowledge that our spirit is connected to all life, all people, all time, all dimensions."

Our foundational principles are embedded in our former name, the Diversity and Spirituality Network. True to our roots, we honor all expressions of the sacred without discrimination, with a bias towards accepting as truth what was best expressed by Sting's The Police, back in the day: "We Are Spirits/In the Material World."
