Navigating Medical Records

Webinar Faculty: Jennifer Grossman, RN, BSN, LNC

About the Webinar:  There are many challenges when it comes to deciphering medical records. Electronic Medical Record (EMR) formats differ greatly from one hospital to the next, providers handwrite notes that can feel impossible to decipher or medical records arrive highly redacted and missing information. In Navigating Medical Records, Jennifer Grossman, BSN, RN, LNC introduces attorneys to the basics of handling medical records. Attorneys attending this presentation will learn about the systems that medical providers and facilities use to document patient care, how to locate the most pertinent information and determine if information is missing. Discussion will focus on those areas specific to criminal defense medical records including emergency room trauma levels, EMS reports, and laboratory/toxicology results. Attorneys will learn where to find the most concise notes on radiology reports and how to interpret medical terminology, abbreviations and symbols. We will spend time focusing on sexual assault assessment forms, the tests used in these documents and their legitimacy. By the end of the presentation attorneys will have gained a greater understanding of medical records as a whole, know how to determine if they need assistance and who/where they can turn to for medical reviews versus expert witness testimony.
