Event description

Description

How do we bring cultural rapport to quality palliative care?

Palliative care providers have become familiar with the question, What matters to you? Getting to a candid answer requires cultural rapport between providers, patients, and their caregivers/families.

In 2016, Regence BlueShield's palliative care team presented “Navigating Cultural Differences: Palliative Medicine Provider Education” – the first in a training series examining topics at the intersection of care and culture. Over two days, ten community leaders and an engaging keynote speaker moved us beyond fearing our differences; they offered fresh perspectives and guidance on how to use cultural humility to build mutual respect and lay a foundation of trust for all patients across all practices.

Please join us on the afternoon of October 11, 2017 to continue the conversation and develop your skill set in bridging cultural differences for quality patient care. This year's Navigating Cultural Differences event features an interactive keynote presentation from Jann Murray-García, MD, MPH, and a panel discussion about exploring and recognizing our own cultural biases and their impact on delivering quality care that honors the wishes of those living with serious illness.

Our keynote

Jann Murray-García, MD, MPH is a founding faculty member and assistant clinical professor at the Betty Irene Moore School of Nursing at UC Davis, where she teaches nurses in the year-long master’s-degree leadership Community Connections course — a practicum in systems-level leadership in community organizations. With Dr. Melanie Tervalon, Dr. Murray-García coined and developed the concept of Cultural Humility in her most-oft cited publication, “Cultural Humility versus Cultural Competency: A Critical Distinction in Defining Physician Training Outcomes in Multicultural Education” (Journal of Health Care for the Poor and Underserved, 1998).
