Find your voice in the heart of nature in this special event at the National Arboretum.

Join award-winning author Inga Simpson on a nature writing adventure in the National Arboretum. Learn techniques for bringing landscapes, flora and fauna to life. This workshop uses a combination of instruction, examples and practical writing exercises, with opportunities for discussion. This workshop is ideal for professional writers in environmental fields or creative writers with an interest in the natural world.

This workshop will show you a range of techniques, including:

  • effective description of nature in your writing;

  • the use of emotion; and

  • the importance of story.

About the Presenter

Inga Simpson is the author of the novels Mr Wigg (2013), Nest (2014), and Where the Trees Were (2016), which was shortlisted for an Indie award and longlisted for the Miles Franklin Literary Award. She has PhDs in creative writing and English literature, and in 2012 won the final Eric Rolls Prize for nature writing. Her short work has appeared in Griffith Review, Clues, WQ, and The Dictionary of Literary Biography. She has been running workshops, writing retreats and mentorships for the last decade, through Olvar Wood and various writers centres and festivals. Her most recent book is her first work of nonfiction, Understory: a life with trees.
