Event description

Description

Uncover the treasures of the Forest in the City! A Blue Heron naturalist will lead families through our shady woodland habitat, searching for pinecones, rocks, leaves, acorns, flowers and more! Our easy ramble will take us on and off our trails as we listen to migrating birds and uncover roly-polies. Families are encouraged to stay and enjoy our Fall Open House events after the walk. We will be creating a fun nature craft with our scavenger hunt finds in our Children’s Garden at 11 am. Our trails are easy to walk, although we do encounter some sandy areas and uneven ground. We recommend a sling or carrier for babies, as strollers can be difficult to maneuver through woodchips and sand. The total hike will be no more than 1/2 mile.

More Information:
1. Contact: Please email Education Director, Amy Zvonar, if you want to attend or have questions: amyz@bhnp.org
2. Directions:
Driving to us: Please use street address 4055 Roswell Rd. Atlanta, GA 30342 when using your GPS to find us. Our main entrance is located across the street from Pike’s Nursery on Roswell Rd. You will see a City of Atlanta Public Park sign near our drive, and cross over a small wooden bridge to enter our parking lot. Parking is free and open to the public. We encourage you to carpool to help us save space for others and to save the environment. Please note that during our October 21st open house you will be directed to alternative parking from this site, as our parking lot will be closed to traffic to allow for event set up.
Using Public Transportation: From the Marta Lindbergh Station, please take Bus Route 5. There is a stop on Roswell Rd. right before the main entrance to Blue Heron Nature Preserve. You can then walk up our driveway, cross the small wooden bridge, and proceed towards the group gathering place located on the northeast end of our parking lot at the head of our Woodland Loop trail. A Blue Heron Naturalist will be there to greet you.
3. Group Gathering Place: All walks will gather at the head of our Woodland Loop trail, which is located just off the northeast end of the parking lot (the side opposite the main building). The trailhead can be recognized by an arbor over the entrance, and you will see a sculpture (or scarecrow) made of recycled items nearby. A sign board will be set up identifying it as the gathering point for the Walktober event, and a Blue Heron naturalist will greet you.

4. Attire: Please make sure to wear clothes that can get dirty. We highly suggest light-weight long sleeves and pants to protect from the sun, biting insects, and poison ivy. (Our naturalists will point out areas of poison ivy and help participants avoid patches.). We suggest avoiding sandals or other shoes with openings, since we will be walking through areas of sand and small rocks. We will provide participants the option of briefly visiting our creek, assuming the flow is low and slow, so wear shoes that can get wet if you wish to do this.

5. Other Ways to Prepare: Please bring a reusable water bottle. We will provide refills for water. Bring extra sunscreen and bugspray. We have a port-a-potty available to the public for restrooms. We will have hand-sanitizer available.
