Event description

Description

Join Wild Virginia for a nature ramble on privately owned land that is managed as a nature preserve by the owners.

With some pasture, the property is mostly forested, and features innovative management practices such as turtle-friendly fencing and a log vane to prevent stream bank erosion. Most of the walking will be on gently sloping bottom land, and will include a restored vernal pool, a Chimney Swift tower, and a look at the aftermath of the 2016 Thanksgiving Fire that burned more than 1,600 acres of forest in the area.

The property is under conservation easement with The Nature Conservancy and protects several species of animals that are of concern to the VA Dept. of Game and Inland Fisheries. You will have an opportunity to hear about the animals and plants of the area, get a glimpse of farm buildings that date back more than two centuries, and learn about some of the efforts that are being made to protect land in Virginia.

At the end of the ramble, there will be an optional hike uphill to an old cemetery hidden in the trees, where graves are marked with uncut stones.
