Natural Plaster Instructional Workshop

~for the Earth Bag Studio Dome at Bonita Domes~

Bonita Domes has become a model and icon for the Earth Dome Building enthusiasts.

In 2010 after attending Cal Earth Institute, In 2010 after attending Cal Earth Institute, Lisa, your host, was the project leader and funded the construction of her dome home. The Final Occupancy permit was issued in April of 2014.

This spring, the crew (see bios below) built an auxilary structure to become the drum making studio. The Studio Dome is the final earthbag dome sturcture on the property.

We're now unto the next phase: PLASTER!

This will be an opprotunity to gain knowledge and get your hands (and feet) into Natural Plaster finish for the already built 13 foot Studio Dome!!!

Learn and Experience!

*Clay plaster vs. Non-natural plasters

*Material components: soil, gravel, silt, clay, straw

*Material mix recepies and processing

*Applications of layers:base, mid and finish coat

*Functions of plaster/render: weather-proofing vs. water-proofing, decor

*Applications for natural plasters

*Conventional vs. alternative structures

June 17 and 18, 2017 9am-6pm each day

$250 pp Includes instruction, hands on experience and daily community lunch.

Your Instructors:

Don Worley, Earth Builder,

Don first studied and taught about earth-building (super-adobe) at the Cal-Earth Institute for four years, and is now a free-lance builder and consultant for hire for earth-bag/super-adobe building projects. Local to the Southwest, Don is an enthusiast for dry-lands natural-building with experience in drafting and design, as well as expertise in research and development regarding lime and ancient cements. With an interest in one day building his own adobe abode, Don means to explore best earthen-building practices through the teachings of the five elements: Earth, Air, Water, Fire, and Fiber.

Nathan Wright, Natural Earth Builder

Nathan has been earth building for 3 years. He has taken 2 apprenticeship courses along with the vault program at Cal-Earth as well as earthen plaster and strawbale courses at The Canelo Project. With a few projects under his belt he is a seasoned earthen builder.

Wade Lucas, Natural Earth Builder

Wade is an artist, designer, and builder-philosopher based out of Southern California. Working with Earth and other natural mediums has been part of his journey to better appreciate and connect with Nature.
