Event description

Description

This day-long photography retreat is about shooting with natural light. Literally, photography means “painting with light,” and the quality of light in a photo makes all the difference in how a photo feels. Working with natural light can be challenging, though, because we don’t always get the kind of light we want when we are out shooting.

The retreat will discuss the principles of light, will increase your sensitivity to the different qualities of light, and will teach you ways to use light to your best advantage.

Come deepen your photography skills and enjoy the creative freedom of shooting on a beautiful sheep farm (and there will be newly born lambs!). The class will be hands-on and small, so everyone will be able to have one-on-one time with the instructor and get feedback on their photography.

The day will start with a class in the farm's 1826 bank barn. After a brief tour of the property, you'll be free to wander and make photographs. We'll gather for discussion over a real-food supper sourced entirely from sustainable farms in the immediate area. You will go home with a new collection of photographs, an increased sensitivity to the emotional qualitites of light, a confidence about your own picture-making abilities, and a happy belly.

About the farm: Stoneleigh Knoll Farm is located in the northwest corner of Virginia, 9 miles southeast of Harper's Ferry, West Virginia. It was traditionally a sheep farm beginning as early as 1817, with the barn buildings built around 1826. Today it is still a sheep and hay farm, managed by the Leigh family, and sells lamb and wool products. The farm is under agricultural easement, a restriction that landowners voluntarily place on their property to keep productive land available for farming for generations to come. Stoneleigh also holds a forestry plan to protect its woodlands.

FAQs

What should I bring?

Bring your camera and wear clothing suitable for walking around on the farm (boots, long pants, jacket, etc.). There's a good chance it will be muddy.

What if it rains?

In case of severe rain, the Rain Date for the event will be Sunday, April 28, same times. If it's merely overcast or a light rain, we will consider ourselves lucky and the day will go on as planned (this is beautiful light to shoot in). Just dress accordingly.

What if I have dietary restrictions?

The meal will be completely gluten-free, besides possibly some bread or crackers on the side. Please let us know in advance if you have any other dietary restrictions.

What's the refund policy?

You may refund your ticket 7 days before the event. We cannot provide refunds after that time, but you may give your ticket to a friend to attend in your place. If for some reason the event is rescheduled or cancelled on our end, you will be refunded your money.

Is it ok if the name on my registration doesn't match the person who attends?

Yes, just please inform the organizer. You can send your email confirmation with your ticket to a friend so he or she may attend in your place if you cannot attend. Your friend must arrive at the event with your ticket information.

How can I contact the organizer with any questions?

Press the "Contact" button below the event organizer description and you will be able to submit questions. You will hear back from Lise via email.
