BIO 103 | Natural History of Austin Class

ABOUT THE COURSE
In this field-based class, you will learn all about the amazing plants and animals of Austin and the ecosystems that support them. This class will focus on native trees & shrubs. Through adventurous field trips to some of Austin’s most iconic natural places, you will learn to identify native species and how to keep a field journal of your observations. Prerequisites: curiosity about nature, and ability to hike 2 miles. Recommended to take concurrently with BIO 102 Botanical Illustration (Field) which meets back-to-back with this class; 10% off if you take both classes. Students responsible for admission to parks visited ($3-$10 per field trip). Prerequisites: curiosity about nature, ability to swim, and ability to hike 2 miles in the Texas heat.
ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR
Hayley Gillespie, PhD
An ecologist and artist, Dr. Gillespie is also the founder of Art.Science.Gallery. She has a special interest in science communication and natural history and earned her PhD in ecology, evolution and animal behaviour from the University of Texas at Austin.

Registration & Cancellation Policy | Payment is required in full the day you register. We reserve the right to cancel or reschedule a class if it does not make a minimum number of registrants. We will notify you 24 hours in advance should we have to cancel a course and we will provide a full refund. We will refund your registration, less a 25% cancellation fee, up to 15 days prior to your class. Please note that cancellations made with less than 15 days notice are nonrefundable. In the event you can no longer attend your class, registration may be transferred to a friend or family member free of charge.
What should I bring? | Each course has different supply needs. Prior to the course or workshop, attendees will be informed by email what supplies, if any, they should bring.
Is there an age requirement for your classes? | Students must be 16 years of age or older to participate in our courses. Occasional exceptions to this requirement (such as for kids classes) will be mentioned in the course description or may be made with the permission of the instructor.
Do I need to print my ticket? | No, you can help us go green by letting us check you in electronically at classtime.
Where is my class location? | The first class on November 6th meets at Art.Science.Gallery. which is located in the Canopy fine arts complex at 916 Springdale Rd., Building 2 #102, Austin, TX 78702. There's plenty of free parking. Subsequent class meetings will be at field sites around Austin.
