Event description

Description

Native plants are not only a beautiful addition to any home landscape, but they also provide benefits for wildlife and pollinators and can be a low maintenance choice for gardeners. Join us on Friday, June 9 for a presentation by David Middleton, horticulturist, gardener, and native plant expert from the Springfield Botanical Gardens. David will talk about some great native plant choices for home gardeners followed by a guided wildflower walk in the gardens.’

Native plants that once lacked prestige are now desirable and in demand. When used with thoughtful design, native plants provide our landscapes with unrivaled beauty. More importantly, they are the life support of our critical native ecosystems.

Consumers are alarmed with the use of certain pesticides, which are linked to a decline of the honeybee, Monarch and other pollinators’ populations. The loss of native habitat to support critical pollinators and other wildlife is also a growing concern.

Native plants provide non-polluting landscapes because they do not need as much fertilizers or pesticides, reducing long-term maintenance after they are planted and established. Native plants also are less prone to destructive insects and diseases. Native species attract colorful butterflies, hummingbirds and insects such as bees, and many fruit bearing trees and shrubs attract song and game birds.

Learn how to incorporate these native thrillers into your home landscaping and be rewarded with years of beauty.
