Description

Class Description
This class serves as the basic introductory course to all of the Master Gardener Advanced Training Native Plant classes. This class can also be used as a survey course for folks who want to know what "native plant essentials" is all about. Topics include the consideration of what is native and why it is considered native, soils, ecology, climate, and the concept of native plant communities. Attendees will also learn why native plants are important and what their preservation and success means for all of us. A hands-on component will be incorporated at the end of the day with either a field walk or identification exercises.

Tentative Class Schedule
9:30-10:00am | Attendees check-in and enjoy light refreshments
10:00-12:00pm | Class begins/mock shop exercise

12:00-12:30pm | Lunch break (bring your own bagged lunch)
12:30-4:00pm | Class continues/mock shop exercise

Continuing Education Credits
This class will count as 6 hours of UME Master Gardener or UME Master Naturalist continuing education and also towards the Advanced Training: Native Plants Certificate.

No refunds will be awarded after September 9th.

Instructor
Dr. Sara Tangren (Agent Associate, Home & Garden Information Center) is a specialist in sustainable landscaping and native plants. In addition to working with native landscapes and planted meadows, she has worked with the University of Maryland Arboretum and the Maryland Department of Natural Resources on the conservation of native plants.
