Event description

Description

A group of local native collaborators led by educators Rose Ramirez, Deborah Small,
Barbara Drake, and Abe Sanchez will share the wisdom of local tribes for traditional and
contemporary uses of native plants. Learn about key plants for medicinal and edible uses,
how they are gathered, prepared and used. Enjoy tasting samples of foods prepared from
native plants, followed by an opportunity to purchase books by Rose Ramirez and
Deborah Small, by the Chia Café Collective, Michael Wilken-Robertson, and others.
Moosa Creek will have a selection of native plants for sale. A light lunch will be
provided, with time for fellowship and sharing.
Rose Ramirez is of Chumash descent, a California native basketweaver, photographer
and educator.
Deborah Small is an artist, photographer, and emerita professor at California State
University San Marcos.
Barbara Drake is a Tongva tribal elder, cultural keeper, and member of the Mother Earth
Clan, a group of Southern California Native American women educators who have taught
extensively in museums, schools and tribal institutions.
Abe Sanchez is active in the revival and preservation of indigenous arts and foods, with
specialties in Southern California Native American basketry and California native foods.
Deborah and Rose's most recent book is the beautifully designed Ethnobotany Project:
Contemporary Uses of Native Plants of Southern California and Northern Baja
California Indians. Barbara, Abe, and Deborah, along with other members of the Chia
Café Collective, recently published Cooking the Native Way. Their books will be
available for signing.
