Event description
The exhibition challenges essentialist readings of artworks projected onto Indigenous cultural producers.

About this Event

Native Art Department International, Bureau of Aesthetics, October 12, 2019–January 25, 2020. Curated by Mercer Union, a centre for contemporary art

Opening reception: Saturday, October 12, 4–6pm. With a guest appearance by Tamaka at 5pm.

Native Art Department International, Bureau of Aesthetics presents objects that highlight how collaboration and cooperation might interrogate art history and strengthen communities. Native Art Department International's (NADI) multi-disciplinary art practice engages collaborative and collective action as strategies to challenge essentialist readings of contemporary artworks projected onto Indigenous cultural producers.

The exhibition culminates Mercer Union's Art-Space Residency at KADIST San Francisco. The non-profit artist-run center in Toronto conceived the residency as an incubator to consider the approach to institutions working small-scale. Together, both organizations have taken up a series of questions around collaboration with Native Art Department International (NADI), a collaborative project by Toronto-based artists Maria Hupfield and Jason Lujan.
