About this Event

HREI and our partners bring you another year of Native American Heritage Month programming!

Learn about Native heritage and experience a taste of Native culture during the winter season. Co-sponsored events kickoff November 4- November 30.

Every November HREI takes pride in bringing awareness of Native American tribal culture, customs, and history to the greater Coeur d'Alene community. Throughout the month of November HREI and the Coeur d'Alene Tribe will be offering various classes and experiences for children, young adults, and adults alike.

This year we will be offering the following events with tickets available for purchase on our Eventbrite:

Native American Inspired Introduction to Gourd Art — $65 by Eileen Marcotte (6 person minimum enrollment) SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 24 FROM 12:30—6:30 PM It is recommended to bring a snack. This class will take you from a raw dirty gourd from the field, all the way to a finished piece of art. We will start by washing a gourd, cutting the top, scraping the inside to clean it. Dyes and inks will be applied to achieve color. The student will have a choice of finishing the top of the gourd with basketry techniques or the natural rim. Embellishment will be offered also. Burning onto the gourd will be introduced.

GOURD ORNAMENTS - $45 by Eileen Marcotte (6 person minimum enrollment) Wednesday, December 4 from 6—8PM Come and make a handmade ornament for your tree. You will have a choice of three different designs, or come with you own in mind. Burning onto the gourd will be introduced. All Materials and tools will be provided. If you have burning tools, you are welcome to bring them.

Mini Pow Wow and Community Heritage Celebration—FREE SATURDAY, NOV 23, 1–4 PM Coeur d'Alene Tribe Exhibit and History, Native dancing and dress, educational activities and stations for kids and adults include songs, language, storytelling and more! Fry bread and Indian tacos will be served. Visit HREI.org for more details.

We will also be offering an additional speaker event focused on positive environmental impacts of the Coeur d'Alene tribe on Lake Coeur d'Alene which will be announced at a later date. Check our website and Eventbrite for further information.
