Event description

Description

Over 700,000 women give birth each year in Scotland, England and Wales and the majority of women receive a safe and effective service. However, there is also evidence of substantial variation in maternity care and outcomes among hospitals as well as between women from different socio-economic and ethnic backgrounds.

Monitoring the standard of care provided by maternity services is essential to informing efforts to give all women and their babies the best possible care.

The National Maternity and Perinatal Audit (NMPA) has been commissioned by the Healthcare Quality Improvement Partnership (HQIP), funded by the Scottish Government, NHS England and the Welsh Government. It is being delivered by the RCOG, in collaboration with the RCM, RCPCH and LSHTM.

The NMPA Annual report launch will be an opportunity to hear first-hand the findings of this first-of-its-kind national audit. The event will launch the first annual report which will highlight key findings and recommendations from the analysis of new data on maternity services in Scotland, England and Wales. It will provide a ‘state of the nation’ overview and will allow clinicians, NHS managers and policy makers to examine the extent to which current practice meets the array of guidelines and standards and to compare maternity services and maternal and neonatal outcomes among maternity units.

The Scottish launch will follow on from the launch in London a week before and focus particularly on the relevant findings for Scotland, where organisation and delivery care differs from the rest of Britain.
