Topic Of Discussion: Detecting Insider Threats On Computers Systems And Networks

Many organizations have developed and implemented Insider Threat Programs (ITP's), and are now looking to gain additional visibility into their employee’s actions. Some organization’s that don't have ITP's, are still concerned with detecting Insider Risks. Enhanced visibility of employee’s actions on computer systems and networks can be achieved using various Network Security Tools (NST's) or vendor purchased Insider Threat Detection Tools (ITDT's).

This NITSIG meeting will discuss the results of a workshop that was held in 2019 to discuss Insider Threat Detection (ITD) on computer systems and networks.

The workshop was done in partnership with the University of Maryland’s Applied Research Laboratory for Intelligence and Security (ARLIS). The goal of the workshop was to answer key questions related to ITD, NST's and the use and procurement of software tools designed to support Insider Threat detection and mitigation efforts.

15 individuals from the Insider Threat Community (U.S. Government / Private Sector) attended the workshop and contributed to the consensus of the set of key challenges related to ITD and ITDT's. All attendees that participated had a role in managing or supporting ITP's, have conducted research on Insider Threats, have served as an Insider Threat Analyst of ITDT output, or have experience in some combination of these functions. Vendors were excluded from the workshop to allow open discussion of user experiences with their current operational ITDTs'.

Presenters

The results of the workshop will be presented by Jim Henderson (Founder / Chairman NITSIG). A discussion panel will follow the presentation. Individuals directly involved in ITD for computer systems and networks that use ITDT's will answer questions.
