Working with Communities: Alcohol and Other Drug Intervention and Policy Research

The National Drug Research Institute (NDRI) is celebrating 30 years of conducting research aimed at preventing and reducing harmful alcohol and other drug use in Australia. To mark the occasion, we invite you to join us for a special one-day symposium, Working with communities: Alcohol and other drug intervention and policy research.

At this free event, leading NDRI researchers will present their latest innovative research in alcohol and other drug (AOD) treatment, harm reduction, policy and prevention. And to top off the day, an outstanding panel of guest speakers will provide their Perspectives on stigma and discrimination around alcohol and other drugs.

Who Should Attend

This symposium is open to people working in the AOD sector; professionals working to address AOD related harm in other sectors such as health, education, research, law enforcement and corrections; policy makers; consumers; and anyone else involved or interested in preventing and reducing harmful alcohol and other drug use.

Program and Speakers

The theme of the symposium – Working with communities – reflects the commitment of NDRI researchers to meaningfully involve relevant communities in the research they conduct, from the earliest planning stages through to final outputs.

Topics and presenters include:

Panel discussion - Perspectives on stigma and discrimination around alcohol and other drugs

Stigma and discrimination can affect the self-esteem, mental health and general well-being of people with alcohol and other drug problems, and substantially impact their everyday lives. Our panel members will discuss the issues from a number of perspectives, including policy, treatment, consumer, media, research and law enforcement, with participation from the audience.
