Description
The New York Bicycling Coalition (NYBC) is working in partnership with the Capital District Transportation Committee (CDTC) to provide a full-day workshop on innovative bikeway design, based on the National Association of City Transportation Officials' (NACTO) Urban Bikeway Design Guide. The workshop will cover design tools and strategies to transform streets into safe and comfortable places to bike, including protected bike lanes, bike boulevards, and safe crossings and intersection treatments. Participants will apply these lessons during hands-on design exercises, evaluating design options and applying bikeway and intersection design strategies, as well as other topics addressed in the Guide.
This course is eligible for 8 hours of AICP continuing education credits and registrants will also receive the latest edition of the NACTO Urban Bikeway Design Guide. Seats for this training workshop are limited to the first 25 registrants.
The schedule for the day will go as follows:
9:00am - Introductions and presentation of NACTO Bicycle Design Guide structure/conventions
9:45pm - Bike Lanes and Bicycle Boulevards
10:30am - break
11:15am - Cycle Tracks
11:30am - Bikeway Signing & Markings
12:30pm – Networking Lunch (provided)
1:00pm - Intersection Treatments and Bicycle Signals
1:45pm - Case Studies
2:30pm - Site visit (walkable location, or short bus ride if transportation can be arranged by client)
4:00pm - Design Exercise: Group exercise to develop design solutions with cross-sections
4:45pm - Design Discussion: Each group reports back design solutions, with instructor feedback and Q & A
5:45pm - Wrap up
This training has been organized in conjunction with the inaugural NY State Bike Summit, taking place the next day at the nearby Hearst Media Center. Registrants who participate in both the NACTO training and the NY State Bike Summit will be given a discounted registration cost for summit and may register for both events here.
