Description

NASA's Office of Small Business Programs (OSBP), in collaboration with the Space Technology Mission Directorate (STMD) and the Office of Education (OE), will be hosting the NASA HBCU/MSI Technology Infusion Road Tour. Together, these three offices will provide an open platform for HBCU and MSI representatives to learn about NASA's Mentor-Protégé Program (MPP), STMD's Small Business Innovative Research/Small Business Technical Transfer (SBIR/STTR) opportunities as well as OE's grant and cooperative agreement opportunities.

By participating in presentations and workshops with various technical and business representatives from NASA and large primes, attendees will learn program fundamentals and ways to pursue procurement and technical opportunities. Guest speakers will also include past and present MPP and SBIR/STTR participants to discuss lessons learned and their success stories.

9:30 am Instructional Workshop: How to Present an Effective Capability Statement

Capability Statements are a promotional or marketing statement about your University and its capabilities, which must be tailored to your audience; the government or prime contractor. This session will provide all the tools necessary for you to market yourself effectively to your intended audience.

9:45 am Federal Government Acquisition & Contracting Overview


This session is an designed give an introduction to and help educational institutions understand the nuances of government contracting. The session will provide an outline of how the government buys and how to sell to the government.

10:30 am Overview of the Small Business Innovative Research (SBIR)/Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) Program

This session will give a general overview of the SBIR/STTR Program which is designed to stimulate technological innovation by encouraging small, high-tech companies and Research Institutions (RIs)—particularly minority and disadvantaged businesses and RIs— partner with NASA to help meet its research and development needs in key technology areas. In addition, this program strengthens the connections between RIs and small companies by enabling them to bring cutting-edge new products into the U.S. economy.

This section gives the audience tips on how to focus their research interests on the topics that gives them the best opportunity to highlight their strengths which provides the best opportunity for a strong proposal.

Minority Serving Institutions will have an opportunity to highlight their research capabilities and opportunities for partnering with Government Agencies and Prime Contractors.

2:15 pm Overview of Minority University Research & Education Project (MUREP)

This session will provide an outline of the strengthening involvement with higher education institutions to ensure that NASA can meet future workforce needs in science, technology, engineering and mathematics, or STEM, fields. Participation in NASA projects and research stimulates increasing numbers of students to continue their studies at all levels of the higher education continuum and earn advanced degrees in these critical fields.

2:45 pm U. S. Army Engagement with HBCUs/MSIs

The Department of the Army will provide an overview of opportunities with the Department of Army Research Programs.

3:15 pm U. S. Army Mentor-Protégé Program Overview

The Department of the Army will provide an overview of its Mentor-Protégé Program (MPP) and will outline opportunities for small businesses and Minority Serving Institutions to participate therein.

3:45 pm Successful HBCUs/MSIs in the Government Contracting Arena

This session will feature a panel Prime Contractors and Minority Serving Institutions that have participated successfully in the NASA Mentor-Protégé Program (MPP), SBIR/STTR Program, and in the Government Contracting arena.

This will be an opportunity to meet your local representatives who will be able to provide additional support after this meeting. Procurement Technical Assistance Centers (PTACs) provide expert Government Contracting help at little or no charge, through training and one-on-one counseling. In addition, NASA Small Business Specialists will also discuss their role as a resource.

9:15 am Utilizing Opportunities within the Office of Education

This session will provide a roadmap to NASA Internships, Fellowships, and Scholarships. In addition, participants will gain an understanding of research opportunities thorough Experimental Program to Stimulate Competitive Research (EPSCoR) and Space Grants.
