Conference Description

The stories we hear and which we tell ourselves have tremendous power to help or harm our personal health and professional outcomes. This daylong workshop will provide an opportunity to consider the stories which surround the caregiving and support we offer to families and individuals. We will identify the ways in which stories can expose us to compassion fatigue and how we can increase resilience. We will focus on the reality of suffering and the place of hope in what we hear, and explore what it would mean to be fully present to them both. We will also consider the elements of good listening and how attunement can impact positively the potential for healing in relationships. Finally, we will analyze the important place of existential and spiritual concerns in our stories and clarify important ways to maintain good boundaries and avoid spiritual malpractice. Through presentation and interaction, this workshop will have wide applicability across the many contexts of caregiving, from clinical situations to supportive institutions to religious communities.

Learning Objectives

   1. Identify the tenets of resilience from the literature;

   2. Analyze practical techniques to increase resilience in daily routines;
