Description

Nanyang Colours: Remembering Tchang Ju Chi | In conversation with Seng Yu Jin and Horikawa Lisa

Sat, 21 Sept | 12.30pm | DBS Singapore Gallery 1

Tchang Ju Chi (张汝器) (1904–1942) was a painter, cartoonist, writer, activist and intellectual leader in Singapore before the Second World War. He established his own studio and became the founding President of the Society of Chinese Artists in 1936. His untimely death during the sook ching that systematically purged supposedly anti-Japanese elements in the Chinese community during the Japanese Occupation of Singapore in 1942 resulted in the loss of what would have been an important Nanyang artist.

Senior Curators Seng Yu Jin and Horikawa Lisa will present their ongoing research on Tchang in collaboration with the artist's family. They will present Tchang as an artist who bridged the worlds of art and literature through the concept of 'Nanyang Colour' that called for art, literature and theatre practitioners in Singapore to depict local concerns, conditions, and contexts here by drawing from their immediate tropical surroundings as sources for their works.
