Description

Event Details –
Photograph with Maresa Pryor-Luzier at some of the best birding areas along the Space Coast of Florida. We will be visiting Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge-Black Point Wildlife Drive, Viera Wetlands, Orlando Wetlands, and Allan Cruickshank Sanctuary – all within 30 minutes of the hotel.

We’ll be able to photograph during the golden hours of sunrise and sunset in coastal and inland wetlands and oak scrub catching birds in their natural habitats, behaviors, as well as scenic opportunities of reflective colors in the marsh.

About the East Coast of Florida-
Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge, established in 1974, surrounds parts of Cape Canaveral National Seashore and Kennedy Space Center. Black Point Wildlife Drive teems with wintering and native birds along the mud flats and mangroves. The refuge supports roseate spoonbills, egrets, herons, raptors, and 16 federally listed species including alligators, reddish egrets, wood storks, and scrub jays. Sunrises and sunsets lend great backgrounds and lighting for beautiful imagery.

Ritch Grissom Memorial Wetlands, known as Viera Wetlands Drive, was developed as an integral component of Brevard County’s water reuse system. The wetlands consist of 200 acres divided into four cells of approximately 35 acres each, plus a central lake. The cells were designed to maintain differing depths of water, reflecting diverse wetland conditions. These wetlands contain bitterns, ducks, mergansers, egrets, herons, limpkins, purple gallinules, soras, bald eagles, otters, and an occasional Caracara.

The Orlando Wetlands Park consists of diked trails offering photographers access to Florida’s wildlife by walking around Lake Searcy through wetlands and hammocks containing purple gallinule, egrets, herons, ducks, anhinga, spoonbills, red-shouldered hawks, osprey, sandhill cranes and, if you’re lucky, a bobcat.

Allan Cruickshank Sanctuary, named after the nationally known ornithologist and author, is a 140-acre sanctuary dedicated to the preservation of Florida’s oak and sand pine scrub providing a healthy habitat for a colony of Scrub Jays.
