Event description
Join NAMI Iowa for our virtual Day on the Hill event as we work to advance meaningful legislation around mental health issues!

About this Event

Registration for NAMI Iowa's Day on the Hill is now open! The annual event provides grassroots support for NAMI Iowa’s legislative agenda which focuses on vital mental health bills under consideration. Day on the Hill provides an opportunity for members and supporters to share their stories with their legislators and ask for their support of NAMI’s legislative priorities. In previous years, Day on the Hill has been a huge success thanks to advocates like you whose involvement is critical in achieving our goals. We are certain that with your participation we can once again celebrate a major success.

FAQs

Is this event over 2 days?

Yes! We have divided our normal Day on the Hill structure to fit across 2 days. The first day (March 17) is our Education Day and will feature expert speakers on our legislative priorities; attendees will leave with key information and talking points to use when contacting their legislators. The second day (March 18) is our Action Day; this is when we want mental health advocates to be reaching out to their legislators (email, phone, postcard, constituent video conference, etc.). The Eventbrite registration page is for the Education Day to gain access to the sessions. There is no registration required to engage on our Action Day and reach out to elected officials.

Who are my Iowa legislators?

You can search by your address for your State Senator and State Representative by going to: https://www.legis.iowa.gov/legislators/find

What are NAMI Iowa's Legislative Priorities?

You can find our 2021 Legislative Priorities here. During the Education Day, we will be focusing on the 3 priority issues.

Can I see the bill overviews and talking points in advance?

Bills can change a lot between now and our Day on the Hill. To provide you with the most accurate information, we will distribute the materials to all registered attendees 1 week before (March 10).

I’ve never advocated for mental health before. Will there be any help?

Yes! We welcome those who are new to the grassroots advocacy to join us. We need your voices! To help our advocates, we will be holding a training session the morning of the event to teach you how to be an effective advocate virtually. You’ll learn tips and tricks to get a hold of legislators and what to say.

I’ve advocated up at the Capitol before. Do I need to attend the training session at 9:10?

Advocating virtually in a pandemic presents many new challenges - even for experienced advocates. We recommend this session for all attendees. Renee Schulte will share tips and tricks on how to connect with your legislators virtually as well as how to effectively share your story.

How do I access the Zoom webinar sessions for the Education Day?

In order to get access, you need to complete this registration process. The Zoom details will be emailed to all registered attendees on March 10.
