Description

What is the NAMI Basics Education Program for Parents and Caregivers?

NAMI Basics is a free, six-session program designed for parents and other family caregivers of children and adolescents UNDER AGE 18 with emotional and behavioral difficulties. NAMI Basics helps parents and other family caregivers of children to understand the illnesses that are causing those behavioral difficulties, and the critical role families play in the treatment of those illnesses. The program is taught by trained teachers who are also the parents or family caregivers of individuals who experienced emotional or behavioral difficulties prior to age 13.

NAMI San Diego is now offering this program to parents and caregivers to help them understand the impact that mental health conditions have on the youth as well as the family.

Please Note: The course material builds on each class, so participants are asked to attend all classes in the session. The first session meets on Saturday, January 19, 2019 with the final session on February 23, 2019.

Family Participant Perspectives

  • “This is such a great step by step program that walks parents every step of the way. It is as if you are holding their hand through it all.”

  • “The course is inclusive of almost all aspects of family and child resources. I could have spent a lifetime getting all this information on my own. I feel supported, strong and ready to go forward.”

  • “NAMI Basics bridges the gap. It provides help that can’t be found in a doctor’s office.”

FAQs

How do I know if this class is right for me?

This class is designed for parents, grandparents and caregivers of youth UNDER 18 years of age who lives with mental illness or is experiencing behavioral health concerns.

If your child /loved one does not have a diagnosis, but you are very concerned about their behavior and need to learn ways you can best support them at home, in school, and in their transition to adulthood, this course is right for you.

My child / loved one is OVER AGE 18. Can I still take this course?

No. The NAMI Basics for Parents and Caregivers course is ONLY for families with youth UNDER AGE 18. This course covers many concerns families of younger children face that families with older children are no longer facing, such as navigating the school system and childhood development issues. Participants with loved ones over age 18 as well as transition age youth , or "TAY" (ages 18 through 25) are warmly invited to take NAMI's Family to Family course. More information about the Family to Family course can be found on the NAMI San Diego website HERE.

If I am a professional caregiver, can I attend this NAMI Basics for Parents class?

No. We never allow anyone into our signature peer education programs (Basics, Family-to-Family, Peer-to-Peer, or Homefront) who do not have direct lived experience. This is in order to ensure a safe, judgment-free environment for all participants so they may be open and honest about their experiences and challenges. We do, however, have an opportunity for professionals called NAMI Basics for Professionals, designed to provide professionals an opportunity to understand the impact that mental health conditions have on the youth as well as the families they serve.
