Description

Judith Liu is a Professor of Sociology, Affiliated faculty in the Ethnic Studies Program, and the Faculty Liaison for the Center for Community Service Learning at the University of San Diego. She earned her Ph.D. from the University of California, San Diego in 1985.

Professor Liu has been the recipient of numerous teaching awards including the Sears Teaching Excellence Award, the San Diego Press Club Headliner of the Year for Education, and the Council for the Advancement of Secondary Education (CASE) California Professor of the Year in 1990. In 2010, she was one of the nation’s finalist for the Thomas Ehrlich Civically Engaged Faculty Award from Campus Compact, and the recipient of the Pacific Sociological Association’s Dean S. Dorn Distinguished Contribution to Teaching Award.


In 2017, she was honored as the faculty recipient of the Woman of Impact from USD’s Women’s Center.


Her 2011 book, Foreign Exchange: Counterculture behind the Walls of St. Hilda's School for Girls, 1929-1937 is the story of Yeh Yuanshuang and Dorothea Kingsley Wakeman and their experiences at the American missionary school.

The NAM will provide a space for immigrant women to talk about their stories, their achievements, and their contributions to the wellbeing of the United States. The dialogue is intended to inspire and motivate other immigrant women to seek a brighter future and to substantiate the interactions between newcomers and native-born Americans.
