Event description

Description

S-924 Multimodal Management of Cerviogenic Headaches

Course Description:

Headaches are a frequent complaint of patients seeking physical therapy, either as a primary complaint or a sequala of other conditions. Current traditional medical evaluation for a source of an individual’s headache utilize significant medical resources without a definitive diagnosis. There are 13 different classifications of headaches, and it is important to differentiate between these classifications to effectively evaluate and treat patients.

Physical Therapy has recognized cervicogenic headaches for decades, and evidence continues to emerge which justifies assessment and treatment of this condition. The unique anatomy of the upper cervical region richly innervated by the trigeminal complex, greater occipital nerve and the suboccipital muscles all provide input to potential headaches. Participants in this course will be presented with a thorough and systematic evaluation and treatment of common headache condition. Through appropriate classification, muskuloskelatal/manual therapy interventions, self-management a cost effective multi-modal approach.

Upon completion of this three (2) day module, the participant should be expected to:

1. Review common headache types and discuss the types which benefit from physical therapy and ones which require further intervention.

  1. Discuss the expanding body of literature regarding classification and anatomical contributions to HA. in particular, the anatomy of the upper cervical region, trigeminal nerve, suboccipital muscles and myodural bridging.
  2. Discuss the expanding body of literature regarding classification and anatomical contributions to HA. in particular, the anatomy of the upper cervical region, trigeminal nerve, suboccipital muscles and myodural bridging.
  3. Demonstrate the assessment of cervicogenic HA’s including the acute cervical scan, traditional cervical scan and condition scripts which are used to efficiently classify HA patients.
  4. Demonstrate palpation of the craniocervical musculature and describe different patterns of dysfunction.
  5. Demonstrate different neuromuscular re-education and neurodynamic strategies for the upper cervical region.
  6. Be able to demonstrate manual therapy techniques to improve mobility in hypomobile areas associated with headache.
  7. Describe the red and yellow flags associated with manual therapy of the cervical and thoracic regions.
  8. Emphasize the importance of creating a therapeutic alliance with patients, providing a matched home exercise program to purposeful, meaningful and functional goals for the patient. Specific Course Objectives: These goals are to remain as is. They are core goals of the Institute and are inherent parts of any NAIOMT curriculum
