Event description
A special gala fundraiser celebrating the 50-year history of the North American Congress on Latin America.

About this Event

Join us for an evening celebrating NACLA's 50-year history of working toward our mission of solidarity with Latin America. The seating arrangement for the event will be banquet style. There will be a dinner buffet and wine reception, followed by a series of presentations, including music and poetry.

The invited speakers are:

Dr. Lorgia García Peña, Roy G. House Associate Professor of Romance Languages and Literatures and of History and Literature at Harvard University, and a founding faculty member of Freedom University, a modern-day freedom school providing education to undocumented students. She is also the author of Borders of Dominicanidad (Duke University Press, 2016).

Ani Cordero, Puerto Rican singer, composer, activist, and co-founder of Puerto Rican Independent Musicians and Artists (PRIMA). Her solo acoustic performance will include a discussion of the political situation in Puerto Rico, her activism and nonprofit work, as well as a musical tribute to the social protests that have arisen throughout the region.

Jean Wyllys de Matos Santos, ex-Brazilian congressman and 2019-20 ALARI Scholar at Risk, Afro-Latin American Research Institute, Hutchings Center for African & African American Research at Harvard University. Wyllys, an outspoken gay rights activist, has been living in exile in response to the repressive Bolsanaro regime. He will lead a tribute to his friend and former colleague Marielle Franco on the two-year anniversary of her assassination.

Javier Zamora, Salvadoran-born poet and author of the award-winning collection Unaccompanied (Copper Canyon Press), and most recently, a 2018-19 Radcliffe Fellow at Harvard University. Zamora is also a co-founder of the Undocupoets campaign.
