About this Event

Prostate cancer is common among all American men but the incidence is higher among African American men. African American men are more likely to be diagnosed at a later disease stage and more likely to die from prostate cancer than Caucasian men.

Low grade prostate cancer is usually defined as a Gleason score of 6 or lower with disease localized to the prostate gland. Active surveillance (sometimes called “watchful waiting”)may not be a safe option for African American men because compared to others, African American men are at twice the risk of dying from prostate cancer as men of other ethnic groups.

Purpose of the Men’s Health Conference:

This conference is designed to increase awareness concerning:

1. What is prostate cancer

2. Advances in the diagnosis of prostate cancer

3. New technology to grade a man’s risk of developing metastatic prostate cancer

4. How the aggressiveness of prostate cancer is determined

5. Treatment options

6. Food as medicine and the importance of diet as a means to reduce the risk of prostate cancer
