Description

Dear Supporter,

The Houston Branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), proudly presents the NAACP Houston Branch 101st Freedom Fund Advocacy & Awards Dinner, Friday, October 25, 2019, at the Hilton Americas Hotel, 1600 Lamar Street, Houston, TX 77010. The black-tie statesman-styled dinner themed “We The People--Preparing For The Next 100” will kick off with a Reception at 7:00 p.m., followed by the Dinner and Program at 8:00 p.m. The Honorable Sylvester Turner, City of Houston Mayor and NAACP Life Member, is our Honorary Chair. As the Dinner Chairs, we are planning for over 1,000 members and supporters to join us in recognizing this year’s four outstanding advocates, including our coveted Mickey Leland Humanitarian Award, which will be presented to The Honorable Bennie Thompson, United States House of Representatives, Mississippi, District 2, and Chairman of the Homeland Security Committee.

For over 100 years, the Houston Branch of the NAACP has been on the forefront of creating, improving and advocating for policies related to civil rights, education, fair housing, criminal justice and other areas where discrimination adversely affects the quality of life of the City’s underserved communities. The black-tie fundraiser is being planned to recognize the extraordinary advocacy in NAACP’s strategic civil rights priority areas: Voting Rights, Criminal Justice, Labor, and Economic Sustainability and Education.

In addition to bestowing the Mickey Leland Humanitarian Award to Chairman Thompson, an outstanding group of honorees has also been selected for their work in four NAACP priority advocacy categories. We’re pleased to announce, Ms. Belinda Everette, NAACP Houston Branch Housing Committee Chair, will receive the Housing and Economic Development Advocate of the Year Award; Dr. Grenita Lathan, Houston Independent School District Interim Superintendent, will receive the Education Advocate of the Year Award. Lastly, we will introduce our new Millennial Game Changer Advocate of the Year Award recipient at this year’s dinner. Through our partnership with iHeartMedia, Inc., the Millennial Game Changer Award recipient will be identified through a month-long campaign aimed at identifying a young person who has worked in our community to advocate policies aligned with the NAACP’s mission.

The annual dinner serves as the branch’s sole fundraiser that directly supports all its advocacy efforts which benefit thousands of Houstonians annually. The fundraising goal for this year’s dinner is $400,000. We are pleased to announce that Chevron has once again helped to kick-start our fundraising effort with a $25,000 commitment to the Freedom Fund Advocacy & Awards Dinner. We are seeking your sponsorship for this historic celebration. Your support will enable us to host an extraordinary and unprecedented event and will allow us to further the mission of the NAACP and continue the fight against the assault on civil and human rights. Accompanying this letter is the Sponsorship Benefits Form, which outlines the various sponsorship levels. To be listed on the invitation, please commit by September 5, 2019.

We look forward to your support of our branch advocacy. Should you have questions or need additional information, please contact the NAACP Houston Executive Director, Yolanda Smith, at 713.545.9696 or via email yolanda@naacphouston.org. We and members of the committee will be following up with you over the next week.

Sincerely,

Argentina and Roger Harris
