“Ka ua Kīpu'upu'u o Waimea.”

The Kīpu'upu'u rain of Waimea.

‘Ōlelo No'eau # 1571

This year’s summit will be held in the beautiful up-country town of Waimea on the island of Hawai’i. Waimea is well known for it’s paniolo traditions, but did you know that the name of the cold rain of Waimea is called Kīpu'upu'u? Ua (rain) has many characteristics, and the ancient people of Hawai'i recognized it’s importance by poetically naming the ua based upon their actions, effects, or location. Ua was observed and beloved for it represented how water shaped and preserved the land. During this year’s summit, the schools and community of the West Hawai'i Island Complex welcome you to learn of their ua and water sources so that you are inspired to seek the name of the rains and waters that are famous from your island home.

Through the HĀ Summit experiences, participants will:

1. Increase their understanding of the HĀ framework and the HĀ pilot;

2. Be able to articulate what HĀ means in various contexts and why it matters;

3. Build cultural awareness and knowledge of Native Hawaiian values, approaches, and places of significance;

4. Determine ways to apply HĀ school-, complex-, office- or community-wide and support education stakeholders to incorporate HĀ;

5. Develop relationships with education stakeholders from across the state, share knowledge and resources, and build a network of practitioners to support a strengthened sense of belonging to the HĀ movement;

6. Build a sense of responsibility to provide HĀwesome experiences; and

Plug into their passion and feel inspired and rejuvenated.

We recognize that it can be cost prohibitive for our neighbor island participants; therefore, OHE will offer the following on a first come/first serve basis:

1. Round trip airfare from your identified airport that aligns to the HĀ Summit schedule;

2. Shuttle service to and from all summit events.

3. Overnight accommodations as follows; and

4. Reimbursement for neighbor island airport parking.

You may choose any or all of the 4 options. If you do choose to utilize any of the travel options, your information will be requested in the Eventbrite registration and OHE will contact you with further details. We will not be able to accommodate individual arrangements for flights, shuttle or overnight accommodations. No per diem will be provided for any neighbor island participant. If you choose to make your own arrangements, you will be responsible for the costs (no per diem will be provided).

Please review the HĀ Summit website at http://hasummit2019.weebly.com/ to learn more. If you have further questions, contact Ilima Choy, HĀ Summit Coordinator through email at: ichoy@ln.k12.hi.us.
