Event description

Description

Join us August 31st from 6-8 pm as we celebrate Black Breastfeeding Week! This event is purposed to commemorate and redirect the narrative surrounding the motherhood experience, particularly breastfeeding.

Throughout August we have organized multiple photo-shoots with self-identifying mothers of the African Diaspora nurturing their little ones by local photographers. These images will be showcased visually at MYLK QUEENS event as we network and connect. The visual installation will be followed by a panel discussion with the self-identifying women leading the charge in Austin advocating for the health of self-identifying mothers and babies of the African Diaspora. The panel discussion will be rooted in the historical context of breast-feeding in the Americas for enslaved women of the African Diaspora while including the present-day lack of diversity and culturally appropriate services within the lactation community.

We will be in Community Room #1. Refreshments will be available for attendees.

Thank you to all of the mothers and little ones that allowed us into their space to share their stories. Thank you to our partners: Tiny & Brave Holistic Services, Leandra Blei Photography, Pensieve In Use Fotos and all the organizers and sponsoring organizations that made this event possible.
