Event description

Description

Did you know that applying too much water or fertilizer to our home landscapes contributes to pollution in the Indian River Lagoon? Excess irrigation carries fertilizer nutrients not used by plants into our groundwater and across the land into our waterbodies, where it affects our drinking water quality and contributes to algal blooms in our waterways. Join UF/IFAS Extension Agent, Sally Scalera, in learning ways to protect the Indian River Lagoon through proper irrigation and fertilization. Attendees will identify ways our home landscapes affect water quality in the Lagoon, learn which nutrients are most needed by plants, and find the best ways to deliver necessary nutrients to support healthy turf and landscaping without over-applying. Participants learn how to use soil testing and fertilizer labels to create a custom landscape maintenance plan for their own yards. Hands-on practice with calibrating a fertilizer spreader will enable attendees to make sure they know how to apply the correct amount of fertilizer, to save money and reduce fertilizer runoff into nearby waterbodies. Come learn how to create your Martin Yard and protect the environment!
