My Fathers Bike

My Father’s Bike is a bittersweet tale of three men tied by blood and divided by everything else. It is a road movie that tugs at your heartstrings even as it makes you laugh. Włodek (played by the jazz legend Michał Urbaniak in his first dramatic performance) is a retired jazz musician whose everyday routine suddenly collapses when his wife of many years Barbara (Anna Nehrebecka), , announces she’s found the love of her life and is leaving her husband for good.

The film revels in differences among the three men (starting with their attitudes, and ending with the kinds of music they like: jazz, classical and hip-hop), but it is ultimately about a bond they share – sometimes in spite of themselves. The generational divide they embody is closely related to Polish history: while both Włodek and Paweł remember the Communist era with its restrictions and limitations, Maciek is very much a child of his time, studying in the UK and living the life of a modern cosmopolitan youngster.

The evening will close with the documentary Michał Urbaniak: New Yorker by Choice, which focuses on Urbaniak’s journey from the jazz scene in Communist Poland to the most prestigious clubs of New York, all the while focusing on his passion. Rambunctious, playful, and yet incredibly focused and delicate when it comes to music, Urbaniak presents many facets of his personality, which he brought out to such powerful effect in My Father’s Bike.
