Musical Futures; it’s the way we learn. Keep music alive and nurture the creative talent of tomorrow (2-day programme)

Musical Futures believes music learning works best when young people are making music, and when their existing passion for music is reflected and built-upon in the classroom.  Musical Futures was established in 2003 and grounded in academic research, is based on the real-world practices of popular and community musicians.  It is now one of the most successful and sustainable music education initiatives in schools in the UK and Australia and more than 1.5 million students worldwide have benefited from Musical Futures in 71 countries.

This 2-day course will explore the Musical Futures approach in delivering practical, engaging, developmental music programs in the classroom including:

  • Just Play – the skills building approach
  • Find Your Voice – vocal approach for engaging students with singing through vocal work and integration of mobile technology
  • Composing & Improvising - models strategies for composing and improvising through classroom workshopping and shows how these can be delivered in practical ways that are both musical and theoretical
  • Songwriting - exploring inventive techniques for teaching contemporary songwriting and is supported by materials that engage students with fresh, hands-on approaches, opening them up to exciting possibilities for storytelling and music creation.
  • Informal learning (based on the research of Professor Lucy Green and developed for use within the classroom) is a model of self-directed learning that aims to enhance student motivation, enjoyment and skill-acquisition in music lessons by tapping into the real-life learning practices of popular musicians. We’ll unpick how this works in practice and discuss the impact a change of approach can have on music teaching in schools

For primary/elementary music teachers and specialists as well as secondary/middle/high school music teachers

What’s involved?

Day one

Introduction to Musical Futures and practical workshops exploring ‘Just Play’, the skills-building Musical Futures approach including resources to support this approach.  Key areas include:

  • Developing instrumental skills in a whole class setting using ukulele, guitar, keyboards, bass and drums.
  • Performing a range of current popular songs at different levels using the Just Play play alongs 
  • Understanding of how this approach can foster outstanding learning in your own classroom.
  • Looking at how performances can be used to measure progress
  • Practical advice on how to ensure that this approach can promote outstanding teaching and learning

 

Day Two

Delegates can bring their own instruments

  • Find Your Voice - an inclusive vocal approach for engaging students of all ages with singing through vocal work and the integration of mobile technology.
