Description

On the Occasion of the 2018 International Holocaust Remembrance Day

The Italian Cultural Institute of Chicago, the Consulate General of Italy in Chicago, the Illinois Holocaust Museum and Education Center, The American Jewish Committee, and PianoForte Foundation

are pleased to present

"Musica Degenerata": A Holocaust Remembrance Day Concert, performed by Davide Casali, clarinetist, conductor and artistic director of the Viktor Ullmann Festival* in Trieste, Italy, and Elisa Frausin, pianist and first cello of the stable orchestra of the Ullmann Festival*

Music played an integral role in daily life under Nazism. Therefore, for the 2018 commemoration, clarinetist Davide Casali and pianist Elisa Frausin will perform music by composers deported to concentration camps and Nazi ghettos. The aim of the duo is to resonate music composed by Italian Jewish composers such as Leo Sinigaglia, Renzo Massarani, and Alberto Gentili, unfortunate authors who were forced to suffer physical or cultural annihilation from the Third Reich and Nazi Germany.

Free and open to the public.

Davide Casali and Elisa Frausin will also perform this same concert on January 28th at 5pm at the Temple Beth El-Maas Chapel in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan.

*The Viktor Ullmann Festival is the first festival in the world dedicated to music composed in concentration camps and in the ghettos and to degenerate music, music prohibited in Nazi Germany and in Fascist Italy because it was considered decadent, damaging and contrary to the racist cannons imposed by the two regines, as well as to music of the exile. Performing this music brings back to life the memory and creative genius of these composers, allowing people to become aware of the Shoah from a new perspective.

Reservations kindly requested.
