Event Details

Experience New England-style traditional dance music with the experts. Rodney Miller, accompanied by Max Newman on guitar, will lead a musicians’ workshop and also perform for the San Antonio Contra Dancers’ Anniversary Weekend.

Rodney Miller

Rodney Miller (from his website www.rodneymiller.net) was designated a "Master Fiddler" in 1983 by the National Endowment for the Arts. He is widely considered to be the foremost exponent of New England style fiddling, a uniquely American blend of French Canadian and Celtic influences. Over the past 35 years, he has toured the U.S., British Isles, Australia and Denmark, performed and taught at hundreds of music and dance festivals, and recorded over ten fiddle albums. In 1999, Rodney represented the state of New Hampshire, playing traditional fiddle music at the Smithsonian Folklife Festival in Washington, D.C. He has also appeared on Garrison Keillor’s National Public Radio show A Prairie Home Companion, performed live with the Twyla Tharp Modern Dance Company, performed at the Lincoln Center in New York, and was recorded on the album Songs and Sounds of the Sea for the National Geographic Society.

 Max Newman

Born and raised in Alaska, Max has been surrounded by traditional music and dance from an early age, often playing alongside his dad for local contra dances and enjoying Irish music sessions. Now living in the Northeast, he plays with Boston-based dance band Nor’easter and with Rodney Miller’s Stringrays. He enjoys bringing his dynamic and varied guitar and mandolin playing to a variety of situations and is especially interest in the craft of playing for dancers. In addition to making music, from 2009-2010 Max worked at the Country Dance and Song Society as Youth Projects Intern, leading workshops and developing materials for dance organizers, callers and musicians. He serves on the committee of Youth Dance Weekend, an event dedicated to developing leadership among the next generation of contra and English participants.

San Antonio Contra Dancers

San Antonio Contra Dancers have been dancing since 1984.  Contra dance is an easy form of community dance that is easy to learn and a joy to do.  No partner is necessary and every dance is taught.  We always have LIVE MUSIC by local bands, and an experienced instructor/caller.

This form of dance can be learned in 15 minutes.  If you can walk briskly, you'll have no trouble at our dances.  In fact, contra dancing is also possible and enjoyable for those who are differently-abled; call Lissa Bengtson for more information at 210-867-0692
