Description

Our January 30th Music Under the Dome series features international competition winner, Koki Sato playing Rachmaninov's fiendishly virtuosic Variations on the Theme of Corelli, utilizing all the color the famous disklavier piano can offer.

Mr. Sato will be followed by the Schwob School of Music's internationally renowned University Singers, under the direction of Dr. Ianthe Marini.

The Singers program is a celebration of our American musical tradition and of the peoples to whom we can attribute it. The African-American Spiritual tradition emanated from the slave songs of the 18th century. These songs were passed among the slaves as a way of keeping faith and endurance through oppression and injustice. Steal Away to Jesus and Go Down Moses were sometimes regarded as protest songs in the 1860s—symbols of the plan to flee from slavery. Within the African-American spiritual is a sense of deep and abiding hope for the promise of living. Leonard Bernstein was a first generation American born to Jewish parents who came to America to provide opportunities of better life for their children. Bernstein’s music synthesizes blues and jazz—two forms of American music, and incorporates the rhythms and folk idioms of a number of cultural traditions that are present in America. The common thread within our program is hope, promise, optimism, resilience, expansion of understanding and knowledge, and cooperation towards that somewhere of peaceful living—those great American ideals upon which our country was founded and by which it continues to move forward. Hold my hand and we're halfway there. Hold my hand and I'll take you there. Somehow, Someday, Somewhere!

All works will be done with artist Lance Tankersley, who will put beautiful images on the dome in synchronicity with these incredible pieces!
