Music Speaks Faith

What makes someone fall in love with a song? Is it the person or the group that performs the song, or is it the melody, harmony or the rhythmic underpinnings that makes that song so compelling? Whatever the case or cases may be, we often find ourselves moved by a power and force that works not only “in,” but also “in-between” the notes of music.

On August 23 (in Owens Auditorium at Sandhills Community College), the Murphy Family Ensemble will once again take the stage and venture into some areas of music where one can easily contemplate these questions—even as the sounds are celebrated and enjoyed. There will be performances of American Classic Standards by Duke Ellington, Hoagy Carmichael, George Gershwin and Cole Porter. There will also be performances of songs by Stevie Wonder, Antonio Carlos Jobim and a potpourri of music by lesser-known songwriters—including original compositions by individual members of the Murphy Family Ensemble.

However, at the heart of this musical presentation will be a conversational journey into the deeper theological perspectives and tenants of the Christian Faith; hope, faith, love, community, grace and mercy. What does this “popular music” say about hope? How can grace and mercy be expressed without words? In what ways can non-liturgical music speak the language of faith?

Rev. Dr. Paul Greene Murphy, son of the late Robert “Bob” and Thomasina Murphy, will be at the piano and will also play saxophone. Paul’s nephew Gary Brown will play drums and piano. Dr. Larry Arnold will be on acoustic bass. Paul’s wife, Sharon, will sing selections from the Hymnbook. Their daughter, Anna Elizabeth, will sing and play guitar. Their son, Drake, will premier an original song that will be featured in an upcoming documentary film for the “Zoe Helps” mission work in Kenya. The eldest son, Kent, (an established music producer of music in Korea and China) will share an original composition for sax and piano. Greene, the youngest child of Paul and Sharon will certainly surprise the audience with his incredible talent!

As these various musical expressions speak to aspect(s) of faith, the conversation will not stop at the concert, but will continue to move in the power that extends into the broader community—through the ministry of Trinity AME Zion Church’s Community Outreach Center (TCOC). It is our goal to reach out unto and engage the people of the community with opportunities to compose, record and perform music, create art, choreograph dances, write poetry, novels and plays. These artistic endeavors will be undergirded by educational programs that will enable children to master the basics skills of reading, writing, listening and speaking. Students will also have opportunities to develop math and science skills as they become critical thinkers and independent learners.

We are certainly grateful for your help, sponsorships and support. Please plan to join us in this journey on Wednesday, August 23. Doors will open at 6 PM for a Silent Auction featuring an extensive variety of Gift Baskets that are sure to entice every patron while contributing to the educational programs to be offered through the TCOC. The concert will begin promptly at 7 PM.
