The EYMF welcomes Dr Rebecca Schaefer and Dr Katie Overy to our second Focus on Research session. The session will include presentations, discussions and examples of activities specifically created for research purposes.
Contrary to popular opinion, the usefulness of music for health and well-being is currently not consistently supported by medical scientific findings. Although this relative lack of evidence obviously does not mean that music-based interventions are not effective, the specific knowledge on which disorders may be targeted through music-based interventions, which patients are good candidates for these interventions, and how these interventions should be created, is still unclear. By pinpointing the mechanism(s) by which music may support recovery in clinical settings or address subclinical complaints, the elements of musical interactions that are crucial for an intervention can be identified, and interventions can be fine-tuned to the needs of specific patient groups. In this seminar, different approaches to researching the effectiveness of music interventions and the related level of explanation will be discussed, while considering the kinds of questions that can or should be answered to improve evidence-based music interventions.
