Event description

Description

Classical music more than any other genre is defined by the past, with a clearly-defined canon that is fixed in time. Modern composers have to contend and wrestle with this overwhelming heritage. In this program, members of Grammy-nominated orchestra, A Far Cry, will play works that incorporate, transform, and deconstruct music from the past, as well as one piece from the classical canon that projects into the future.

Caroline Shaw: Punctum
Joseph Haydn: String Quartet in C Major, Op. 20 No. 2
Caroline Shaw: Entr’acte
Osvaldo Golijov: Tenebrae

"The Grammy-nominated string orchestra A Far Cry has developed a distinct approach to music-making, with playing and programming that encourage risk-taking and exploration for both player and audience. The self-conducted orchestra is a democracy in which decisions are made collectively and leadership rotates among the players (“Criers”). This structure has led to consistently thoughtful, innovative, and unpredictable programming — and impactful collaborations with celebrated performers and composers." - A Far Cry

This concert will feature four of the orchestra's core members: Sarah Darling, Jae Young Cosmos Lee, and Alex Fortes

The performance is an extention of the current exhibition, How to Travel in Time, on view at apexart. Organized by S.I. Rosenbaum, the exhibition features artists who, in one way or another, attempt acts of temporal recovery, many of whom not coincidentally, are members of diasporic, displaced and/or Indigenous communities -- communities for whom the apocalypse has already occurred, and for whom time travel has become imperative to survival.

How to Travel in Time is on view from November 8- December 22, 2018.
