Dear Friends!

On Wednesday, August 28th, 2019, at 7:00 p.m., Bixby, Remy and I are thrilled to invite you for a one-of-a-kind evening of MUSIC FOR CLARINET, BASSOON, AND PIANO, featuring brilliant trios by Ludwig van Beethoven and Mikhail Glinka alongside impassioned works by Saint-Saens, Poulenc, and Schumann. The French Romantic composer, organist, conductor, and pianist, Camille Saint-Saens (1835-1921) was a child prodigy and a prolific composer of chamber music whose works were generally couched within the Classical tradition. His Neo-Classical Sonata for bassoon and piano in G Major, op. 168 (1921), written in the last year of his life, sparkles with many pastoral and humorous moments, showcasing simpler melodies and leaner textures than are found in his earlier, more bravura chamber works. The 20th-century French composer and pianist, Francis Poulenc (1899-1963) favored the woodwind instruments over the strings. His avant-garde Sonata for clarinet and bassoon (1922, rev. 1945), written one year after Saint-Saens' Bassoon Sonata, is cast in three compact movements totaling only eight minutes long, and shows the influence of Stravinsky with its motivic repetition, numerous metric changes, as well as of jazz and bitonality.  Mikhail Glinka's magnificent Trio Pathetique for clarinet, bassoon, and piano (1832) happens to be one of the few trios to have ever been composed for this colorful and unusual instrumentation, whose word in its title - "Pathetique" - refers to the unrequited romantic attachment, given the note on Glinka's autograph score which reads, "I have known love only through the pain it brings." A celebrated Romantic composer, pianist, and music critic, Robert Schumann (1810-1856) composed his three characterful Fantasiestucke for clarinet and piano, op. 73 (1849) for a convivial Hausmusik soiree - just as you will enjoy this evening! These three whimsical pieces - entitled "Tender with expression," "Lively and light,' and "Quick and with fire" - run a wide gamut of emotional states showcasing both the clarinet's and piano's poetic expression and brilliant virtuosity. Our program will conclude with Beethoven's fiery Piano Trio in B-flat Major, op. 11 (1797) which earned its nickname, "Gassenhauer," because of its third movement - a set of nine variations on a catchy theme from the then-popular dramma giocosoL'amor marinaro ossia Il corsaro by Joseph Weigl. While Mozartian in spirit, it already bears the stamp of Beethoven's fiery temperament and originality, owing to its rare and unusual instrumentation for piano, clarinet (or violin), and cello (bassoon). Don't miss this enchanting evening of Music for Clarinet, Bassoon and Piano!

Bixby, Remy, and I look forward to seeing you all on Wednesday, August 28th!

Best wishes,
