Description

MUSIC AND MINIMALISM: COMPOSITIONS FOR CHARLES CURTIS

This talk by Jennifer Burris (Assistant Professor of Curatorial Practice, Nanyang Technological University) explores the intimate exchange between composer and musician in the development of Minimalist music. It focuses on four works specially written by artists––Alison Knowles, Alvin Lucier, Éliane Radigue, and La Monte Young––for renowned concert cellist Charles Curtis. Drawing on Buddhist philosophies of impermanence and traditions of Indian classical singing like the Kirana gharana, this series of compositions investigate hearing, as Curtis says, “not just as the physiological processing of sound waves [but as] an infinitely complex layering of emotional and cultural responses, memories, habits, preferences, and so on.”

This programme is held in conjunction with the exhibition Minimalism: Space. Light. Object., which runs from 16 November 2018 to 14 April 2019 at National Gallery Singapore.
