Event description

Mushrooms of the Front Range is taught by Jennifer Frazer, a freelance science writer and blogger of "The Artful Amoeba" for Scientific American. She has been a guest on Radiolab, and has written for Scientific American Magazine, High Country News, Grist, and for National Geographic online. She was the health and environmental reporter at the Wyoming Tribune-Eagle in Cheyenne and, while there, won the AAAS Science Journalism Award. Trained in biology and plant pathology at Cornell University, she is a member of the Colorado Mycological Society.

Thousands of species of mushrooms lurk in the woods and yards of Colorado. This class will cover basic mushroom biology, important mushroom toxins, common Colorado mushrooms, how mushrooms make a living, and how to recognize the major mushroom families. We'll also learn how to make beautiful spore prints that can be vital to identification. In the field, you'll get hands-on experience finding and identifying mushrooms. You'll learn how not to get lost on forays and be trained in the uncommon art of the mushroom hoot. (Field locations are subject to change based on moisture conditions preceding the trips.

Are there ID or minimum age requirements to enter the event?

Our classes are geared toward adult learners. The minimum suggested age for attendance is 18.

What are my transportation/parking options for getting to and from the event?

Information about the indoor class will be provided to registrants about two weeks before the class starts in a "Welcome" email from the Instructor. Come to the class location and Jennifer will meet you there. On each of the field days we will meet at a location specified at the prior class.

If you wish to carpool, you can make your own arrangements. We will provide a list of participants who allow us to share their names and emails for this purpose. While we suggest that all occupants share the fair cost of gas/operating costs, BCNA does not organize or participate in any carpool arrangements. If you carpool, please discuss and agree on your travel plans in advance.

What can I bring into the event?

You may want paper and pen/pencil on all three days. The Instructor will let you know if there is anything specific that you should bring to the field session. Otherwise, be prepared for time outdoors, away from the car. You might bring a daypack. You will want to bring water and food for snacks and lunches. Wear hiking clothes and footwear adequate for conditions. Bring sun protection (sun lotion, sun glasses, hat, long sleeves), bug dope, and any field guides, binoculars, trekking poles, or other personal items and extra clothing you might want.

How can I contact the organizer with any questions?

Please email registration@bcna.org. We do not check this account every day, but will try to get back to you within four business days.

What's the refund policy?

We open registration for each class just six weeks before the class starts so that you will have a good idea of your availability. Our apologies, but refunds are not available. Most of the proceeds from classes go to our instructors. The remainder helps support our education program, research grants, publications, seminars, and conservation efforts. If you must cancel, we hope you'll consider your payment as a donation to the Boulder County Nature Association. Of course, if we must cancel a class, your payment will be fully refunded.

Can I update my registration information?

Do I have to bring my printed ticket to the event?

No. Your name will be on our registration list. You may print your Confirmation Email if you want a record.
