A journey through the Fungi kingdom, including mushroom ID, toxicology, edibility, and the ecological significance of fungi in Central VT.

About this Event

Join NBNC naturalist and educator Dave Muska on a journey through the Fungi kingdom. In this class, participants will be introduced to the fundamentals of mushroom ID, toxicology & edibility, as well as the ecological significance of fungi found in Central Vermont.This workshop will consist of both an indoor presentation followed by a mushroom foray and exploration of fungi on the NBNC property and adjacent forests. Dave will share his knowledge of species found along the walk as well as his personal experiences of their uses for food, utility, and medicine.

  • Maximum class size: 20 people
  • Minimum age: 18

To bring:

  • Notebook and pencil
  • Lunch and snack
  • Weather-appropriate clothing and footwear
  • Basket or container for collecting specimens in the field.
  •  Subject-related field guides are encouraged although optional.

Class to include:

  • 1.5 hour presentation/lecture encompassing field ID, ecology, edibility and toxicology.
  • 2 hour mushroom foray/walk
  • 2 hour identification practice

About the Instructor:

Dave "Muskrat" Muska is a Naturalist Educator with NBNC, a Wilderness Skills Instructor, and licensed Outdoor Guide. He is the founder of Ondatra Adventures, an organization devoted to providing participants with a deeper connection to the natural world through educational programs, classes, guided hikes, and excursions. Dave works with all ages to develop meaningful and personal relationships with nature and its fellow organisms throughout the Northeast and beyond.
