Event description

Description

This event is part of the Urban Sketchers NYC 10x10 Workshop Program.

About This Workshop

Drawing live animals isn’t easy but you’ll find that the more you observe and simplify, the easier it becomes. Practicing what you learn in a zoo setting will help you later at the dog park or on the street. There will be a handout listing general principles, and strategies to deal with the inevitable: animals move. We’ll review the handout and talk about drawing gestures and what distinguishes one species from another, in other words, why my camel came out looking more like a giraffe.

There will be several demos. Then you will draw a nearby animal that appeals to you. The leader will walk around to assist. We’ll come back together and do a quick review of strategies and methods; another demo; more sketching. You’ll include surroundings and color as you become comfortable with your results.

Location

This workshop will be held at the Bronx Zoo. Take the 2 or 5 subway to West Farms Sq/E Tremont Ave and walk 4 blocks straight ahead on Boston Road.

Admission is free on Wednesdays. The exact meeting point will be announced to attendees close to the date.

Supply List

Bring a chair and a medium-size pad. Your drawing material should support speedy work — a broad-tipped brush/pen and ink wash; ball-point pens; dull-pointed large, soft (4-8B) pencils; or conte crayon.
