Mummers mask making workshop
Overview
Mummers Mask Making Workshop at Arcade
We want to revive the almost forgotten tradition of mummers in Donegal at Christmas. There is evidence of this tradition having roots as far back as 2500 years ago, taking various forms over the years, but it has largely become an extinct movement in ireland since the early 20th century.
Join us in person for a fun, hands-on session where you'll craft your very own unique mask made from straw using traditional techniques. Whether you're a seasoned artist or just looking to try something new, this workshop is perfect for all skill levels. We will supply the materials, and mulled wine/hot drinks, and you will leave with a traditional mummers mask which will last years when stored dry!
The workshop will be presented bi-linguel in both Irish and English, and will be part of Arcade's Christmas market. We will also have a trad session, 15 artists and makers selling their wares, a kids drawing wall, and we'll end the day with (an optional) tour of the bars in town wearing our masks and singing a song in each.
