About this Event

The San Francisco Public Library is pleased to host a performance featuring two major kathak artists, Uma Dogra from Mumbai and Charlotte Moraga from San Francisco, followed by an interactive dialogue with the artists.

Uma Dogra and Charlotte Moraga were connected through Charlotte's guru, Pandit Chitresh Das. He built an international network among kathak dancers.

Pandit Chitresh Das came to the U.S. in 1970 and established kathak here and then returned to India to re-establish his parents' institution, Nritya Bharati, in Kolkata.

Uma Dogra is a powerful woman in kathak dance, revered for her artistry, particularly her abhinaya (acting and storytelling ability), as well as someone who has a strong voice in kathak dance, supporting next generation kathak artists by presenting two major annual Indian classical dance festivals in Mumbai.

Charlotte Moraga is carrying forward her renowned guru's legacy, while evolving and making her own impact as a master kathak artist, brilliant choreographer and highly respected Kathak teacher.
