Event description

Description

Madison-area Urban Ministry is celebrating 46 years of social justice advocacy and programs dedicated to helping individuals overcome barriers to success and well-being. Founded in 1971, MUM has served as a prophetic voice for justice in our community for over four decades. MUM’s many programs inspire hope for individuals returning to the Dane County community after incarceration by breaking down the barriers that prevent them from fully participating in our community and the lives of their families. In addition, MUM supports families of those incarcerated through reading programs, family visit programs and youth mentoring programs. This helps bring wholeness and healing to individuals and their families. And after much anticipation, we are excited for the upcoming opening of Healing House, a recuperative care facility for homeless families. We know that it is through the support of you, our Partners for Change, that these programs exist and have lasting impact on our community. Together, we are Changing Lives, and Changing the Community!

Keynote Speaker: The Honorable Paul Higginbotham

Retired Appeals Judge Paul Higginbotham was the first African-American to serve as a Wisconsin appellate court judge. He currently serves on Governor Evers Transition Team. He received both his undergraduate and law degrees from UW Madison, later joining the faculty of the UW Law School. Judge Higginbotham began his legal career in 1985 as a staff attorney for the Legal Aid Society of Milwaukee, Inc. The next year, he joined the law firm Reynolds, Gruber, Herrick, Flesch & Kasdorf and Borns, Macauley & Jacobson. In 1988, he became the minority affairs coordinator of Dane County, and in 1992, he became a Madison Municipal Judge. In 1993 and 1994, he worked as the acting executive director of the Madison Equal Opportunities Commission. He then became a Circuit Court judge. He worked in this capacity until he was appointed to the Court of Appeals in 2003. In 2011, Judge Higginbotham was the recipient of the Martin Luther King, Jr. Heritage Award here in Madison.
