Description

About the Tour:

In this multisensory tour of the Mesopotamian gallery, learn about five-senses archaeology in two ways: first, the actual physical practice of archaeology, and, second, the ways archaeological theory has tried to come to grips with the reconstruction of the past as it was experienced by sensing human beings.

Driving to the Campus/Accessible Parking /Directions:

There are self-park garages available on campus. Please refer to the UChicago Parking and Garages Map for their locations. Street parking during the school year can be difficult, so please plan your time accordingly.

For drivers with people with disability, you may park in the accessible parking spots in the Lexington Lot (marked #3 in the attached UChicago Parking and Garages Map), located south of the Oriental Institute. The parking lot entrance is on University Avenue, going one way toward North. Ramp access is available, and drop-offs are permitted on University Avenue. After dropping off your guests, please go to the front desk for the temporary parking permit which you will be asked for your photo ID in return. Because only one temporary parking permit is available, we expect a large group for this program, so please arrive early to avoid waiting for traffic congestion at the parking lot gate. Please contact our Front Desk at (773) 702-9522 for questions about the temporary parking permit, or visit our website at http://oi.uchicago.edu/access

Additional accessible parking is available at the Ellis Avenue Parking Structure, located at 5505 South Ellis Avenue. The parking structure charges a fee 24 hours a day or requires a permit. It is three blocks north and one block west of the Museum.

The Oriental Institute is located at 1155 E. 58th St., Chicago, IL 60637, and we you find us on Google Map here.

Checking In:

Upon arrival, please have your group leader check in with our program volunteer in the lobby.

Assistive Listening Devices (ALD) & Building Accessibility:

A limited number of ALDs will be available. There is one elevator in the building. Restrooms are located in the lower level. Folding stools will be available in the gallery tour. Visitors who are blind or partially sighted are given priority in this program.

Inside the Museum:

All our galleries are on ground level and are wheelchair accessible. Elevators are located in the lobby with access to all floors. A limited number of wheelchairs are available for free on a first-come, first-served basis. Breasted Hall is equipped with a designated wheelchair area in the front row.

Visitors may use strollers throughout the Museum. An accessibility ramp into the Museum is located on the west side of building on University Avenue.

What Else You Can Do at the OI:

Please feel free to visit the rest of the museum and the gift shop (Suq) on your own after the program. We are open until 5pm on Friday.
