Foundation Skills and Core Concepts: Teaching Mathematics in a Standards Based Curriculum.

Presented by Marilyn Zecher

This workshop addresses the foundations of mathematical literacy as recommended in standards based curricula. It covers subitizing and numeracy, place value, four basic operations, fractions and decimal fractions with linkages to ways the conceptual hierarchy of skills impacts higher math. Illustrations include the various ways these core concepts impact and link to algebra. All teaching strategies and explicit language are appropriate for use with any curriculum or program. The instructional sequence Concrete-Representational-Abstract is modeled with explicit instructional language which enhances student comprehension. Participants practice instructional strategies during the workshop. These workshops are appropriate for general education teachers, resource and special education teachers, ESOL teachers and any teachers who teach in an inclusion setting. They can be adapted exclusively for intervention and remedial settings.

Day One: Research, Rationale, Description of Learning Challenges Impacting Learning in Mathematics, Core Instructional Strategies, CRA Instructional Sequence, Importance of Subitizing and Numeracy Skills, and Neuroscience Behind Shifts in Instruction

Day Two: Specific Strategies for Teaching Place Value, Basic Operations, and the Beginnings of Multiplication/Division Concepts

Day Three: A Continuation of Multiplication/Division Strategies, Developing Fluency Models, Strategies for Differentiation, Fraction and Decimal Concepts with Implications for Algebra. Full color handouts, Time-limited access to a password protected dropbox of materials, use of manipulatives as well as some model manipulatives for participants to take home.

All workshops have a cost unless otherwise indicated. No one will be turned down due to cost. If you have any issues making full payment or general questions, please email Sloane Gray at SGray@JewishEdProject.org.
